Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporomandibular joints is a modern diagnostic method that allows to assess the condition of the muscular, bone and cartilage structure of the joint. Today, temporomandibular joints dysfunction ranks 3rd among all maxillofacial pathologies. Therefore, high-quality diagnostics is an important stage in treatment.
Indications for MRI of the temporomandibular joints:
- pain that occurs when chewing or at rest;
- restriction of movement in the mandibular joints;
- a feeling of crunch when communicating;
- traumatic injury to the lower jaw;
- malocclusion;
- night teeth grinding (bruxism);
- dislocation of the temporomandibular joint;
- planned orthodontic treatment or orthoplasty, etc.

Diagnostics
The St. Paraskeva Medical Center has a powerful radiology department with innovative diagnostic equipment of the highest world level.
One of them is the latest generation 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imager Toshiba Vantage ZGV Atlas (Japan).
Advantages of MRI
- absolutely harmless to health diagnostic method;
- clear and high-quality visualization of all structures of the temporomandibular joints;
- step-by-step scanning-3-3.5 mm.
Examination
The examination begins with filling in the patient's information questionnaire and preparation before the examination: removal of outerwear, jewelry or metal structures. Personal belongings can be left in a lockable booth, and valuables in a safe.
The duration of the procedure is 30 minutes.
The evamination consists of two stages. In the first stage, the temporomandibular joints are scanned with the mouth closed. Upon completion of the first stage, the medical staff of the MRI room helps the patient to place disposable aligners (special plates that are placed between the upper and lower teeth). After that, the second stage of scanning begins – with the mouth open. Directly during the examination, the patient is required to lie still.
At the end of the diagnosis, the patient dresses and waits for a CD with all the images obtained during the examination. The patient can receive the conclusion of the radiologist by e-mail or at the reception at the St. Paraskeva Medical Center.
Contraindications to MRI of the temporomandibular joints
- Pacemaker, any other implanted mechanisms and paramagnetic metal structures in the body (that tend to be magnetized).
