Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rectum is a diagnostic method of examination that allows you to obtain clear, highly informative images of the examined area under the influence of magnetic resonance. Such an examination is non-invasive, that is, without intervention in the rectum. MRI perfectly shows the condition of all layers of the distal intestine, as well as lymph nodes and surrounding pelvic organs.
Indications for MRI of the rectum:
- suspected malignant or benign neoplasm of the rectum (cancer, polyps, etc.);
- inflammatory processes of the rectum (abscess, phlegmon, fistula, etc.);
- assessment of the prevalence of the process (secondary lesion);
- quality control of the treatment (post-radiation, chemotherapy or surgery);
- anomalies in the development of the structure of the rectum and the like.
Diagnostics before the MRI of the rectum
The St. Paraskeva Medical Center has a powerful radiology department with innovative diagnostic equipment of the highest world level.
One of them is the latest generation 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imager Toshiba Vantage ZGV Atlas (Japan).

Advantages of MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging at the Medical Center of St. Paraskeva provides a step-by-step scan of 3 mm to examine the surrounding organs and tissues in assessing the prevalence of the pathological process and 1 mm targeted in the area of the detected neoplasm. Thus, the radiologist can see even the slightest deviations from the norm when processing the obtained images.
Preparation for the examination
- Microclysters are recommended for cleansing the distal intestines.
- It is recommended to avoid eating 3-4 hours before the scheduled examination.
- A slag-free diet and abstinence from eating foods that cause gas formation 2-3 days before the scheduled MRI.
MRI of the rectum is performed with intravenous or intramuscular administration of antispasmodins, which allows scanning to get clear images without artifacts.
In some cases, the patient may be offered intravenous contrast. If the patient has no contraindications, then a peripheral catheter is placed in their vessel.
MRI of the rectum
The examination begins with filling in the patient's information questionnaire and preparation before the examination: removal of outerwear, jewelry or metal structures. Personal belongings can be left in a lockable booth, and valuables in a safe. The duration of the procedure is up to 45 minutes. Before the examination, the medical staff of the MRI room informs the patient about the peculiarities of the procedure.
Directly during the examination, the patient is required to lie still.
At the end of the diagnosis, the patient dresses and waits for a CD with all the images obtained during the examination. The peripheral catheter is removed from the vessel, and a disposable patch is applied to the puncture site. The patient can receive the conclusion of the radiologist by e-mail or at the reception at the St. Paraskeva Medical Center.
When performing an MRI of the rectum with contrast, a contrast agent is remotely injected into the vessel using a modern MRI injector Ulrich Medical Mississippi XD2000 (Germany). At the moment of contrast injection, the patient does not feel anything.
Contraindications to MRI of the rectum
General contraindications:
- pacemaker, metal structures in the body that tend to be magnetized, etc.
In case of contrast:
- Individual hypersensitivity to gadoteric acid, meglumin, or any drug containing gadolinium.
- Functional disorders of the kidneys (decreased renal clearance).
