A biopsy is a highly accurate method of examining the resulting biopsy (piece of tissue) from the affected area, followed by its microscopic analysis to determine malignant changes in its structure. The method is used in the presence of pathological changes detected during previous examinations (ultrasound, cytology, laboratory tests, etc.).

The following types of cervical biopsies are performed at St. Paraskeva Medical Center:

  • cervical biopsy with pathomorphological examination (using instruments: scalpel, conchotomom or radio wave loop);
  • cervical biopsy and cervical canal bar biopsy with pathomorphological examination (using instruments and a syringe for aspiration cell collection).

Services

Indications for cervical biopsy

1. Basic:

  • positive indicators of gynecological cancer markers;
  • confirmed leukoplakia;
  • confirmed dysplasia according to the Pap classification;
  • pathological changes during colposcopic examination;
  • malignant process based on the results of liquid cytology PAPP test, etc.

2. secondary (if there is a combination of factors that may indicate malignant processes):

  • cervical erosion;
  • polyps, warts, etc.;
  • pathogenic microflora of the cervix (based on smears for pathogenic flora and sterility);
  • a positive test result for human papillomavirus (HPV) and the like.

Preparing for the examination

  • Biopsy is recommended to be performed in the 1st phase of the menstrual cycle (6-11 days from the beginning of menstruation).
  • Before performing a biopsy, the gynecologist prescribes mandatory tests: complete blood count (CBC), blood clotting time, viral infections (HIV, hepatitis, etc.), infectious diseases (syphilis, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, etc.).
  • It is necessary to refrain from sexual contact 2-3 days before the start of the planned biopsy.

Examination

According to the obtained data of the colposcope examination and the results of laboratory parameters (HPV smears, cancer markers, etc.), highly qualified doctors of the St. Paraskeva Medical Center determine the method of biopsy and inform the patient about the course of the examination and its features.

The following services can be provided at the St. Paraskeva Medical Center:

  • radio wave conization of the cervix;
  • loop excision of the cervix;
  • cone-shaped radio wave conization of the cervix;
  • destruction of cervical pathology (radio wave, argon plasma).

Immediately before the biopsy, the patient is placed on a special gynecological couch. The area from which the biopsy will be performed is treated with an antiseptic and locally anesthetized with a lidocaine-based spray or other local anesthesia drug.

The next step is to collect biomaterial from the affected area using tools. The duration of the collection is several minutes. The estimated total procedure time is 20-30 minutes.

After that, our specialist re-treats the area from which the biopsy was performed with an antiseptic. The resulting biomaterial is sent for pathomorphological examination, which is prepared within 7-10 days from the moment of collection.

After this intervention, the gynecologist provides the patient with recommendations to avoid injury to the area from which the biopsy was performed, and in some cases prescribes medication to relieve the inflammatory process, and so on.

At a second consultation, after the gynecologist has worked out the results of the biopsy, the patient is prescribed appropriate treatment (medical, surgical or combined).
