What is a sinus CT scan?
For visualization of maxillary, ethmoid, frontal and maxillary sinuses in medical practice, a fast and painless diagnostic method called computed tomography is used. The method is based on scanning of the examined area under the influence of X-ray irradiation, which allows to obtain a three projection (3D) image of all sinuses and surrounding tissues.

What are the indications for MSCT of the paranasal sinuses?
- constant feeling of nasal congestion;
- if the presence of neoplasms (cysts, polyps, tumors) is suspected;
- odontogenic inflammation of the sinuses (when a foreign body enters the sinus cavity, for example, filling material);
- traumatic injury to the bones of the facial skull;
- gratuitous loss of sense of smell (not related to Covid-19);
- evaluating the effectiveness of sinusitis treatment;
- developmental anomalies, etc.
What is the procedure for conducting it?
First of all, the patient fills out an informational consent to conduct an X-ray examination and indicates their complaints (informed consent is filled in every time a CT scan is performed). The patient must then remove all metal and electronic jewelry from the scanning area (head and neck). After that, the patient lies on his\her back on the scanning table. The head is fixed in a special stand to get clear images. It is forbidden to move or turn your head during scanning. The duration of the procedure is 5-7 minutes.
Upon completion of the diagnosis, the patient receives an image (disk, film or flash drive), and the result (decryption) can be viewed in our application, received by email or at the reception in printed form.
At what age can CT scans be performed for children, and are there any restrictions for minors?
There are no age restrictions for performing computed tomography. However, to perform diagnostics for minor patients, parents are recommended to adhere to the following criteria:
- computed tomography is the last link in the diagnosis (if there are no contraindications, harmless examination methods - MRI, endoscopy, etc. are performed first);
- the patient has a referral from the doctor, which clearly indicates the reason for choosing such a diagnosis (preliminary diagnosis);
- the presence of one of the parents is mandatory during the scan (accompanying persons are dressed in a protective apron).
Are there any contraindications to sinus CT scans?
- involuntary twitching of the head( hyperkinesis), because this causes the appearance of motor artifacts, and the resulting image will be blurred;
- pregnancy (only for vital signs);
- the patient's weight is more than 125 kilograms.
