Indications for kidney CT scan
- abdominal pain radiating to the lower back, the cause of which cannot be diagnosed;
- changes in urine (presence of blood or turbidity);
- soreness, burning, loosening of the jet when urinating;
- injuries to the abdomen, back, and kidneys;
- questionable diagnoses in ultrasound diagnostics;
- suspected abnormalities in the development of the urinary system;
- urinary incontinence;
- quality control of the completed treatment (surgical, medical, hardware), etc.
We recommend that you first consult a family doctor or a narrow-profile specialist (urologist, andrologist, surgeon, etc.) before making an appointment for a CT scan of the kidneys.

What does a CT scan of the kidneys reveal?
- urolithiasis (stones in the kidneys, ureters, bladder);
- hematomas, rupture of the kidney capsule, etc.;
- presence of benign changes (cysts, lipomas, angiomyolipomas);
- inflammatory processes (pyelonephritis, glumerulonephritis, kidney abscess);
- presence of malignant neoplasms (renal cell carcinoma, etc.);
- developmental abnormalities (horseshoe-shaped kidney, doubling of the excretory system of the kidney, defects of the pyelourethral segment), etc.
Advantages of performing a CT scan of the kidneys at the St. Paraskeva Medical Center
On the basis of St. Paraskeva Medical Center there is a powerful radiology department, which is equipped with innovative diagnostic equipment, one of which is a 128-slice computed tomography scanner of expert level Toshiba Aquilon CX (Japan).
Such characteristics of the equipment allow scanning the kidneys and urinary system with the smallest step-by-step cut of 0.5 mm. This allows the CT scanner to record even the smallest changes that will be processed by a radiologist.
Possibility to check kidney function in real time (blood creatinine test determines renal clearance; excretory phase of scanning allows visualization of ureters and bladder filled with contrast).
High-quality view of kidney images in three projections, with 3D color reconstruction of the renal arteries, ureters and bladder.
How to prepare for a CT scan of the kidneys?
Computed tomography of the kidneys is carried out with the introduction of radiopaque drug, which "stains" the kidneys, blood vessels and adjacent organs for better visualization of pathological changes. Contrast is filtered out by the kidneys and excreted naturally in the urine during the day. To check the quality of the urinary system, before diagnosis, all patients undergo blood sampling to determine the kidney samples (creatinine).
Before the examination, the nurse places a peripheral catheter in the patient's vessel (on the arm), and performs a blood sample for this analysis, which is prepared for 20-30 minutes. If the patient has no contraindications and creatinine levels are within normal limits, he is referred to the computed tomography room for examination.
