Multislice computed tomography of the temporal bone is a technique for diagnosing pathology of the middle ear, inner ear and vestibular apparatus by exposure to X-rays.
Conditions that are diagnosed with MSCT of the middle and inner ear:
- vascular pathology;
- tumor formations;
- inflammation (otitis media);
- infections (abscess);
- injuries (displacement of bone structures, cracks, fractures);
- degenerative changes;
- hearing loss;
- deafness.

Indications and contraindications
MSCT of the ear is prescribed for strict indications - hearing loss, otitis media, suspected tumor, the presence of exudate in the middle ear cavity and other pathologies.
Usually, the doctor aims to determine the etiology of hearing impairment, visualize the plane of fracture and displacement of bones in injuries, identify inflammatory and infectious foci, tumor formations. The technique is also used to monitor the course of the disease and evaluate the treatment performed.
A relative contraindication for the study is pregnancy. In this case, an MRI of the temporal bone is performed.
Advantages of MSCT of the ear
- detection of pathology in the early stages;
- determining the organic cause of the disease;
- no pain, non-invasive method;
- MSCT results are more accurate than conventional CT scans;
- research is conducted faster;
- it is possible to detect formations, the size of which is less than the thickness of the slice.
Preparation
MSCT of the inner ear does not require special training. Before starting, the lab technician will ask you to remove the earrings, piercings, and metal jewelry from your neck.
Results
To conduct the study, the patient lies down on the tomograph table. The table is placed in the center of the machine. The obtained data is converted into multi-plane thin sections, which are processed and analyzed by a radiologist.
The study of the temporal bone lasts up to 10 minutes. St. Paraskeva Medical Center is equipped with the latest equipment and takes care of the patient's time. Therefore, you will receive the results of MSCT in Lviv on the day of the study, along with the conclusion of a radiologist.
