The gallbladder is an organ of the digestive system located next to the liver, performs the function of storing bile (a fluid that is formed in the liver and is involved in digestion). It is possible to assess the condition of the organ using ultrasound - a highly informative, fast and safe examination. This diagnostic method has no contraindications and shows:
- shape, size, contours and condition of the walls;
- congenital pathology;
- concretions (gallstone disease);
- inflammation of the gallbladder. Cholecystitis is an acute condition that may require surgical treatment (for example, a concrement blocked the duct and an inflammatory process began);
- organ motility disorders (dyskinesia);
- benign and malignant neoplasms.

How to prepare for an ultrasound of the gallbladder
In order to avoid excessive gas formation, which affects the quality of organ visualization, it is necessary to follow a diet for 1-3 days (do not consume alcohol, carbonated drinks, milk, dairy products, cabbage, legumes, etc.) If necessary, take a medicine for bloating. Ultrasound is performed on an empty stomach or 3-4 hours after the last meal (immediately before the examination, smoking, lollipops, chewing gum, water and any food that negatively affects the diagnostic result are prohibited). The exception is an urgent condition.
How is the examination carried out?
During the examination, the patient lies on his/her back (may be asked to lie on his/her left side, take a deep breath and hold it, etc.), the gel is applied and ultrasound diagnostics is performed with the help of a special sensor for up to 20 minutes.
