Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a method of examination that makes it possible to examine the condition of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum using an endoscope inserted through the oral cavity. The complex design of the endoscope provides not only the examination of the mucous membrane, but also, if necessary, the possibility of introducing additional tools for various manipulations and operations (taking the mucous membrane for histological examination, the so-called biopsy, stopping bleeding, removing polyps or foreign bodies, etc.)
Advantages
St. Paraskeva Medical Center uses "state-of-the-art" endoscopic video systems FUJIFILM ELUXEO 7000 and 700 series endoscopes of the latest generation.
The advantages of this high-quality equipment are the ability to enhance and differentiate endoscopic images: 4-LED illumination technology, LCI and BLI image enhancement modes, as well as Zoom.
These endoscopic devices are thinner in diameter than the devices of the previous generation, so patients do not feel discomfort during the examination, and the pediatric endoscope is able to diagnose even children from birth.
All endoscopic examinations are documented with a series of high-quality images of the digestive tract. At the patient's request, the images can be recorded on a CD. Upon completion of the examination, the patient receives a consultative opinion of the endoscopist and further recommendations.
Indications
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is performed:
- for dyspeptic symptoms (abdominal pain, belching, heartburn);
- if a stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer, or cancer is suspected;
- with dysphagia-difficulty, impaired swallowing;
- if there is bleeding or if it is suspected;
- as screening or disease control in those patients who have an increased risk of developing cancer (gastroesophageal reflux disease with Barrett's esophagus, pernicious anemia in the course of atrophic gastritis, gastric resection).
Preparation for the examination
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is performed on an empty stomach, that is, you can not consume food 6-8 hours before the start of the examination. In patients with arterial hypertension, blood pressure is measured before being referred to the endoscopic office. If the values are higher than normal, it is recommended to take short-acting antihypertensive drugs sublingually (ie under the tongue).
3-5 minutes before the examination, the patient's throat is irrigated with 10% lidocaine solution, after which the patient is placed on a special couch on the left side. During the preparation, the nurse controls the patient's position and monitors his/her condition.
If the patient is allergic to anesthetics, it is recommended to consult our anesthesiologist.
After completing the preparation, the endoscopist begins the examination.
Examination
Examination of the patient is a fairly quick procedure and lasts from 5 to 7 minutes. From the beginning of the examination, the endoscope is easily inserted into the esophagus, slowly moving into the stomach and duodenum. The presence of an endoscope in the oral cavity can irritate the root of the tongue, but in no way interfere with full breathing.
Contraindications
The examination is not recommended in the presence of such diseases:
- severe mental disorders;
- recent infectious diseases;
- angina pectoris;
- attacks of bronchial asthma;
- acute circulatory disorders.
