Doppler ultrasonography is a modern method of ultrasound diagnostics, which allows to assess the condition of the patient's vessels, based on the so-called "Doppler effect". The principle of the method is that with the help of a sensor that the doctor applies to the examined area, ultrasound waves are directed passing through the pulsating vessel, which changes the frequency of these waves. The sensor captures all data and transmits it to the monitor. Thus, the ultrasound doctor can assess the condition of the vessel, the speed and direction of blood flow through it.
Advantages of dopplerography:
- a painless method of vascular examination;
- a harmless diagnostic method that is carried out even for children and pregnant women;
- fast to carry out (10-15 minutes);
- does not require special preparation before the examination.

Doctors
St. Paraskeva Medical Center offers the following types of duplex scanning:
- Dopplerography of the vessels of the upper and lower extremities (varicose veins, vascular atherosclerosis, vascular thrombosis);
- Dopplerography of neck vessels (physiological kinks of vessels, atherosclerotic changes, thrombosis);
- Dopplerography of liver vessels and portal system (vascular thrombosis, portal vein dilation, etc.);
- Dopplerography of abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava (aortic aneurysm, thrombosis, atherosclerotic changes);
- Dopplerography of the umbilical cord and fetus (absence of "oxygen starvation" of the fetus, condition of the umbilical cord and fetal vessels).
Doppler imaging is used for:
- aneurysms;
- vascular thrombosis;
- atherosclerotic changes in blood vessels;
- varicose veins;
- vascular abnormalities;
- vascular malformations and other circulatory disorders;
- to assess the blood supply to the fetus in pregnant women.
Examination
There is no special preparation for vascular dopplerography. It is performed in the same way as a conventional ultrasound examination.
The patient takes off his/her outer clothes and lies down on a special couch, after which a gel is applied to his/her skin and diagnostics begins. By moving the sensor around the examination area, the doctor displays the best projection of the vessel on the screen and turns on the Doppler function. Assessing the blood flow in the vessel, he/she can easily press the sensor on the patient's body. By recording the data on the monitor, the doctor records the image and completes the examination. At the end of the procedure, the gel is wiped off with a disposable paper towel, the patient gets dressed and waits for the conclusion.
Contraindications
Dopplerography has no contraindications, so it can be used for patients of any age.
